How To Remove Spots & Stains From Carpet
Doesn't it seem like whatever is not supposed to get on the carpet always does? Here are a few tips on how to clean spills using products you probably already have.
Always Remember - To remove a stain, simply blot the spot and work from the outside in, rinse thoroughly with clean water, then blot again. Never rub or scrub the carpet.
wet or latex paint
Mix 1/4 teaspoon of non-bleach detergent (or white vinegar) with 4 cups of water.
Special Water-Soluble Stains
Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 1 cup of water (but not on wool or wool-blend carpet; instead use mild detergent and water).
Fat, Oil, and Wax
Place a paper towel over the stain and with a clothes iron set to warm, iron residue into the towel changing the paper towel often. It should melt off the carpet onto the paper towel.
Gently scrape the burn with the edge of a dull knife.
Moisten a towel with rubbing alcohol and press it on the affected area. Once moistened, gently wipe it off and repeat until gone.
Wax and Gum
Use ice to freeze the wax or gum, then break it up with a spoon or dull knife. Vacuum out before the pieces soften again, repeat until gone.
Blot the area with a paper towel dipped in nail polish remover, changing often to a clean part of the towel until gone. Blot away remaining polish remover with a clean, wet towel.
Absorb as much as possible with paper towels. Pour on a small amount of a one part white vinegar to one part water over the whole stain. Let sit for a few minutes. Finally, apply a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of clear, mild, non-bleach detergent mixed with 4 cups of water. Absorb excess moisture with a towel (stand on it). Rinse with plain water and blot dry while applying pressure.
