How To Remove Cat Urine Smell From Carpet
There are several reasons why a cat might pass by their litter box and urinate elsewhere in your home. If your cat is ill, has behavioral issues, is getting used to a new pet or child, or is protesting a dirty litter box, then it might choose to use your carpet or even your furniture as a litter box instead. Until the issue is resolved, these steps can help you remove that terrible cat urine smell.
Step 1. Soak up as much urine as possible with paper towels. To remove the most urine, stand on top of the paper towels on the urine spot (remember to wear shoes).
Step 2. If the cat urine is dry, pour cold water on the stain, and then soak up.
Step 3. Use a commercial product made especially for cat urine odor removal found at your pet store or a homemade solution made from ingredients found in your own home. Make sure to test on a small area of your carpet first to make sure it does not damage your carpet.
Step 4. Vinegar is great for killing bacteria, and it’s bacteria that causes that terrible urine smell. This mixture works great on old and new stains. Mix 1 1/2 cups of warm water and a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Pour this solution over the stain and allow it to sit until dry.
Step 5. After the water and vinegar solution is dry, sprinkle the area heavily with baking soda.
Step 6. Mix 3/4 cup of regular 3% percent hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of dish detergent. Spray this solution over the baking soda. Don’t forget to test a small spot of your carpet first. Work the baking soda into the carpet.
Step 7. Now let this sit and dry for a few hours. Once the area is good and dry, vacuum up all of the excess baking soda. If the stain is extremely tough, repeat the entire process again.
Step 8. Rinse the area with a small amount of cold water to remove any residue. Then soak up excess moisture with paper towels and allow to dry.
If mixing homemade solutions is not your thing, there are commercial products available that work well too. Avoid using ammonia to clean urine. The "pee smell" of ammonia might encourage your cat to mark the spot again. Make sure to look for enzyme based cleaners because they work to break down the urine and neutralize the odor. Make sure you read and follow the instructions for these products.
