How To Remove Rust Stains From Carpet
When you move that piece of furniture and discover a rust stain on your carpet, it can certainly feel like your carpet is ruined. But you can remove rust stains with one of several homemade solutions. Remember to test each solution on an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to ensure that it does not discolor the carpet.
The First Step
Regardless of which homemade solution you choose to use, the first thing you need to do is remove all of the rust particles you can from the carpet. Using a butter knife or spoon, gently scrape the rust stain to loosen any rust. Vacuum the area and repeat until no more rust particles come out of the carpet. Now you are ready to attack the stain with one of the following solutions.
White Vinegar Solution
First, warm the vinegar for the best results. Moisten a small white towel with the warm vinegar. Blot the rust stain heavily with vinegar to wet the affected area completely with the vinegar. Let the vinegar sit on the stains for about an hour, you should be able to see the rust stain lightening as time passes. Repeat until the rust stain is no longer visible. Soak up any vinegar left in the carpet with paper towels. Rinse the area with plain water. Soak up as much excess moisture as you can with paper towels and allow to air dry.
Squirt a small amount of liquid dish soap onto a damp white towel. Blot the rust stain with the soapy area of the towel. Blot the stain repeatedly and heavily with the soapy towel. Allow the soap to sit on the stain for 5 to 10 minutes. Using a paper towel, start blotting up the soap and rust, don’t rub it. Check paper towel for rust as you blot, switch to a clean area of the towel and continue blotting. Repeat if necessary. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with a small amount of cool water and dry with paper towels. Try standing on the paper towels on the wet area to absorb as much moisture as possible.
Lemon Juice Solution
Pour some warm lemon juice into a shallow bowl; then shake in a generous amount of salt. Dampen a small white towel with the lemon solution. Blot the rust stain repeatedly and heavily. Let it sit on the stain. After 5 minutes or so, rinse the area with a small amount of plain water. Soak up any excess moisture with paper towels and allow to air dry.
Rust Stain Prevention
Place plastic caps or furniture coasters under metal furniture legs, or use a dark area rug under the furniture to prevent the rust from reaching the carpet.
