CARPET CLEANING: HOW TO REMOVE PAINT FROM CARPET
When you’re painting the interior of your house, the last thing you want to do is spill paint on your carpet. But if a few paint drops manage to drip down on to the carpet, have no fear, there is a solution.
(Remember to always do a spot removal test on a portion of carpet that is normally not visible.)
HOW TO REMOVE WATER-BASED PAINT STAINS FROM CARPET:
If the paint stain is still wet, simply blot the spot with a wet paper towel to remove as much paint as possible- don’t rub, just blot.
Mix 1 cup of lukewarm water with 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing soap. Wet a towel with the solution.
Work from the outside of the paint stain to the inside, gently blotting the stain. Repeat until the paint is removed. Blot up moisture with dry towel.
Rinse with clean water. With a dry towel soak up any excess moisture by pressing down on the towel repeatedly. After letting the area dry completely, follow up by vacuuming.
If the paint stain is dry, use 1 cup hot water and 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing soap. Let the solution sit for a few minutes to soften the paint.
Once the paint is softened, use a butter knife to gently scrape the paint stain. Continue to add more solution as you scrape.
If the paint is still not softening, consider using a handheld steamer while you scrape to eventually remove the paint stain from the carpet.
HOW TO REMOVE LATEX PAINT STAINS FROM CARPET:
Blot the spot to remove as much wet paint as possible – don’t rub, or you’ll push the paint further down into the carpeting.
Mix 1 cup of lukewarm water with 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing soap. Use hot water if the stain is dry. Wet a towel with the solution.
Work from the outside of the paint stain to the inside, gently blotting the affected area. Repeat until the paint is gone. Blot up any excess solution with a dry towel.
Rinse with clean cold water. With a dry towel soak up any excess moisture. After letting the area dry completely, vacuum to lift the nap of the carpet.
HOW TO REMOVE OIL BASED STAINS FROM CARPET:
If the paint stain is dry, you’ll want to use a steamer to soften the stain. Apply steam directly to the stain. Simultaneously pick at the paint stain with a needle or a pin to try and break it up and pull out the paint. Continue until stain is removed, working gently with the carpet fibers to avoid damage.
